Monday (my actual birthday)

9:38 AM / 10:38 AM EST

Me: "Graaant, thanks for the birthday wishes. How are ya?"
Grant
: "Definitely, man. [Pause] We are in the middle of another gunman running around."
Me
: "Oh God. Seriously?"
Grant
: "Yeah, one dead and another has been shot. As far as they know."
Me
: "That's so nuts. Is it near your campus or back home?"
Grant
: "It’s the dorm right next to mine."
Me
: "Oh man. Be safe and careful. I would cry a river if you even got hurt, let alone more."
Grant
: "Yeah, I’m stayin’ in my room."
Me
: “Yeah, probably best. If you need random entertainment at any point today, just call me."
Grant
: "Okay, I might."
Me
: "I'm retarded. It's a little sad."
Grant
: "No, that’s awesome. I’m gonna start drinking."
Me
: "I'm contemplating goin' to class 'cause it'd be funny."
Grant
: "Drunk class is always fun."
Me
: "Oh yes. Okay bud, I’m off. Talk to you later."
Grant
: "Seeya."

Grant goes to Tech, for those of you haven't figured it out yet. I honestly was still a little drunk but went to class anyway because I thought it was funny. I saw Ryanne, and she was impressed(?) by my ability to... I don’t know... stand?

Josh and I went to O'Henry’s for our free birthday steaks and a huge appetizer sampler. He was wearing the same thing as he wore the night before too, so I felt vindicated. At O’Henry’s, they had CNN on, and that was the first time I realized the magnitude of the tragedy at Virginia Tech. The count was 30 people higher than the two from the morning. Adrian called me a few seconds later to ask if I had heard from Grant lately. I almost lost it, but apparently Adrian was no more updated than I was. [Grant and the other dozen friends I have at Tech are fine. Thank God.]

Class. I called G-Money again to ask how he was doing. Apparently that morning we spoke in the interim between shootings, so at that point he had no idea what was going on either. My thoughts and prayers have been with Tech since that day.

Whitney and I took Puja "shopping" on Magazine in the afternoon. I use the quotation marks because Whitney hates shopping and we happened to get there right as all the stores were closing. We wound up at La Divina Gelateria, which is basically the Whole Foods / Baja Fresh of gelato stores. They make everything from fresh and organic ingredients. Whitney treated me for my birthday to a three flavor sundae. Cioccolato scuro (dark chocolate), cocco (organic Philippine coconut), and tiramisu.

We went to dinner with Peter, Lauren, David, Lizzie, Sylvia, Nicole, Becca, and Matt. Mat & Addie’s was the best restaurant I’d never heard of. I think, because they were so many of us, we tried everything on the menu. Everything I had was wonderful:

  • three-onion, smoked salmon and goat cheese pissaladière (thick crust French pizza topped with house-smoked salmon, goat cheese, caramelized shallots, green and red onions, and capers)
  • fried oyster salad (on arugula with green onion rémoulade topped with apple smoked bacon, pickled fennel, and onion)
  • crispy duck leg confit and 17th ward blood orange Lousiana yams with Nueske’s bacon-braised collard greens and sauce Rouennaise
  • nectar float (homemade vanilla ice cream floated with a local nectar soda)

Lundi Gras

My day began with wakeup by Peter and a phone call with Ben. All our newly awakened, hoarse-from-too-much-partying-and-drinking, Tara Reid voices sounded exactly the same. A shower fixed that.

Lauren, her friend Evian, Stephanie, and I went to Mother's Restaurant downtown for lunch. It was amazing. Evian doesn't eat red meat or seafood so she got a chicken poboy, but the rest of us formulated a plan of attack that would get us what I consider the best stuff Mother's Menu has to offer: Ferdi's Po-Boy, a dressed po-boy of roast beef, ham, debris, and cheese; the combination plate (Jerry's Jambalaya, crawfish ettoufee, red beans and rice); a fried oyster plate; and an absolute overload of potato salad. Then we split some delicious peach bread pudding for dessert.

After that we walked down bourbon so Evian could see it, showed her Pat O'Brien's, bought drinks. and had a sang the afternoon away at their Piano Bar before walking to Cafe Du Monde for beignets and by the river.

We went back uptown to Ben's place for Proteus and Orpheus where David and OMG Sylvia(!!!), with Jack in tow, joined us. We went out to dinner at Nacho Mama's after and pretty much dove headfirst into some guac. I highly recommend the shrimp and bacon quesadilla.

We left dinner at eleven to finalized plans for our last Mardi Gras.

Sundi Gras

Sunday started off with a trip to Popeyes, so it was a good day by default. David and I picked up the chicken he bought for the day long camp out on the neutral ground that our group of friends planned for the Krewes of Okeanos, Thoth, Mid-City, and Bacchus. It was amazingly successful. I'd say about fifty people were there at one point. Besides the Popeyes (and requisite biscuits and sides), we had king cakes, chips, crawfish, burgers, hot/corn dogs, random food items people bought from nearby places all day, and gallons of beer and liquor. (There was a creation of a controversial new drink called "The Peter," which is cranberry juice, vodka, and champagne.)

I got kicked in the stomach! Looking back, it was pretty hilarious. I'll be nice and not say who the culprit was. I was upstairs with some other people in the apartment of our friend Brooks, who was nice enough to let us use his bathroom. I went back down the stairs to head out to St. Charles when I saw a girl coming in, looking madder than a wet hen and soaking wet. I said "____, what happened to you???" And I admit I was chuckling a bit because it was a funny sight. "I HATE YOU. DON'T TALK TO ME OR TAKE A PICTURE. I'LLFUCKINGKILLYOU!" Then she kicked me in the gut and ran away.

Explanation? Apparently Drunk Cosmin, who was watching the parade from a window upstairs spilled his beer... and it landed on poor _____. She thought I had decided to throw alcohol on her then run downstairs to laugh at her. Pretty funny. Well, maybe not to her.

At the end of the parades, ______ and I rode back with another fun Drunk Girl and got caught in traffic. _____ took a nap on me, and we cuddled and she said "we should sleep together more often." At the end of the ride - luckily Sober Peter was driving - she told me it was the best nap she ever had and napping on me was "like sleeping on a cloud!" I guess that kick softened me up?

Carter&Co, Nicole, and I went out to dinner but wound up at New Bruno's because everywhere else was already closed or extremely busy. Everyone else got the usual cheese fries and sandwiches, but Will and I decided to accompany our Black 'N Bleus Burgers (dressed 1/2 pounders with bacon and blue cheese) with Debris Fries, which are amazing waffle fries topped generously with roast beef debris, green onion, and a little horseradish sauce.

After a pitcher of beer, we walked back to Nicole's place for the travelers to crash and for me to say seeya to 'em. And somewhere in that ten minutes, the world fell apart.

When I got back to Bruno's, Car Ride Drunk Girl had apparently left due to a personal crisis of sorts. And members of the baseball team that had been bickering in Bruno's had been exiled to the street where they were openly brawling now. Bouncers from both of the Bruno's had to pull them apart and eventually N.O.P.D. showed up. At the end of this, I was about to walk back in and some bitch tried to shove me out of the way. Then I realized the bitch was Kicking-Cloud Drunk _____. She said she was so happy to see me, and then she hugged me and went to stand in the corner and looked upset. She called me over, and I asked what was wrong and if I'd seen Someone, and I told her I hadn't, and she told me to leave her alone. Emphasis added for irony's sake. Then Lauren came rushing out to save the day.

Eventually Lauren came back, and life was fun again. Lots of other people were there too. Sometime after as-yet-unmentioned Drunk Girls had made out (apparently prompted by my t-shirt) another new Drunk Girl grinded with Jordan to Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love To You." They were grinding in front of the dartboards to the chagrin of all the players. I wouldn't want to piss off people holding darts but whatever. Last Drunk Girl of the Evening decided to throw up in her drink, set it back down on the table, and pick up a new one. (That's when Lauren and I decided it was time to leave.)

On the way out, those two tried to convince me that New Orleans is "pretty tame" and that Gainesville is the party capital of the country. They asked what time our bars closed. Ours don't! Shut up, bitches.

I like [drunk] girls that like [drunk] girls.

F-ed Up Friday

It was... in both the good way and the bad way.

First class: Canceled after we turned in our discussion topics. Second class: Short. Third class: First exam. SERIOUSLY WHO GIVES AN EXAM THAT'S NOT ON THE SYLLABUS AT THE START OF THE YEAR ON THE LAST FRIDAY BEFORE MARDI GRAS SAYING THE ONLY OTHER DAY WE COULD HAVE HAD IT IS THE FIRST DAY AFTER MARDI GRAS AND DOESN'T OFFER MAKE-UPS? Joyce. That's who.

After that, I checked mail and found I'd gotten a package of homemade chocolate chip cookies from Marney, mother of my brother's best friend, lovely woman that she is. Makes me wonder what she send Adrian or her own actual son. That was a nice pick-me-up after the exam

Carter & Co came over to meet up with Peter and me, and we went to happy hour at the boot for a quick round before some shopping on Magazine St. (Apparently Carter missed certain stores and me as a "shopping buddy.") We picked up some new duds at the style lab and found exact replacements of ruined clothing at buffalo exchange.

Ben was nice enough to put us on the guest list for watching the Krewes of Hermes, D'Etat, and Morpehus at his St. Charles condo, so we stopped by The A&P to pick up some ice, Jim Beam, and a bottle of Grey Goose as a present for our gracious host. (We later found out that during the parades I ended up drinking half the bottle of Beam by myself; no mixers for it and no one else wanted it straight up.)

After the parades, we went to Sake Cafe and had a sushi feast and then went to Bruno's for a few rounds. Ben and Peter went their separate ways, but I went to Frenchmen Street with Carter & Co. Cafe Negril had an amazing live reggae band playing, and James Gandolfini was hanging out there too. We made eye contact and I mouthed "Tony Soprano." He responded with a smile and handshake and told me Happy Mardi Gras. Awesome

The rest of the night (or morning since it was 3AM at that point) went downhill from there. We should have followed Tony Soprano's lead and gone home and crashed, but we didn't.

A few highlights of the short version are:
  • loud, sloppy Bourbon St
  • tired and drunk and annoyed at the bar
  • Carter&Co, aka my ride home, wanted to stay
  • quest for a cab with Ben
  • We became the drunk guys with dead cell phones and no rides.
  • minor bitchfest with Ben
  • almost fist fight with cab driver
  • loud altercation at my front door with Carter
The story ends with me going to bed at 9AM.

quickie Friday entry

I had my first exam, classes, went to the grocery with Shannon and Shivani, and then met up the gang for our annual Oshun and Pygmalion happy hour at The Columns. (We always go this Friday since the Friday right before Mardi Gras is always too busy.) Drinks. Beads. After that, we grabbed some dinner at Superior Grill, where the waitress carded everyone even though only Stephanie ordered a margarita. It was pretty funny. Some of us went out to Bruno's after for beer and darts. Good times.

Steph and Peter in any pose resembling this exemplifies Mardi Gras!

weekend's off to a great start

Thursday I made lunch for Adrian, and we caught up. For those of you who don't know, he's pledging Sig Ep and is president of their pledge class. And he has a super-single now. Apparently his former roommate moved to another building to be with his girlfriend (and they broke up within three days). I had lunch with Tara and spent my free afternoon doing laundry and studying. Wes and I finally watched the Legend of Zelda: Animated Series he has on DVD, and he lent me the discs so I could finish it. I've watched them all. I made my dish for Italian Night - more on that later - and dropped off a portion for Sarah as thanks for lending me her mixer, but Maddie found it first. Then I went to 80s Night with a bunch of friends and even more were there.

Yesterday after class I slept away the afternoon. Then I went over to Becca's for the ITALIAN POTLUCK DINNER we planned in honor of Giada De Laurentiis, whom we both love. I was impressed with everyone's cooking. The menu:
  • two kinds of bruschetta
  • salad with parmesan crusted broccoli and cauliflower
  • garlic bread
  • stuffed mushrooms
  • cinnamon gnocchi
  • sausage pizza
  • two kinds of lasagna
  • several kinds of pasta
  • chicken parmesan
  • and I made a strawberry tiramisu
Also, like we did on Thanksgiving, we went around the room and everyone said what they were thankful for. But this time the things had to be specifically Italian. After dinner, everyone waddled away to various things and some of us hung around, chatted, and drank too much wine. After that, a few of us decided to go out. There was a brief interlude of Nicole walking around Aron quad with a glass of wine and my knife block, looking like a serial killer, while waiting for Will. We all went to my apartment for a bit, and Becca joined us. Nate had woken up, and Nicole had one of my two favorite quotes of the night when she invited him to Bruno's / introduced herself:

"Put your pants on, and let's go! How many guys have I said THAT to??? Oh and my name is Nicole."

On the way to Bruno's, Will had my other favorite quote of the night:

"Well with Top Chef, I can't eat the food... but with Project Runway, I can wear the dresses... So..."

But at least we all agree that Top Design sucks.

I brought out my waterproof cards since last time Nicole and I were at Bruno's (with Carter and Peter even) we ruined a deck playing Kings. This time we ruined the game by not remembering all the rules and by letting two obnoxious drunks play. But it was still fun. After a little Photo Hunt and another round, we called it quits.

No pics yet but here are some screen captures of that dvd.

goin' to the Mardi Gras

The past few days have been more catchin' up with friends while goin' out to eat, but I received some riveting news this morning. Carter is officially comin' down for Mardi Gras. In the unlikely event you don't remember him (or even more unlikely event you don't know Peter and me) he's the pirate on the right. So excited I just can't hide it!
The reunion of the brothers of Alpha Pi Chi is not far away.

AND if that's not thrilling enough, an hour later I found out that not only have the lovely Gisela "No Longer A Ho If She Comes To Mardi Gras" Lopez and Mikey, Mr. "I'm Just Having Fun," himself hung out since I introduced them in Chicago... but they are also both comin' down for Mardi Gras! It will be like this but less chill and more Patron.

TGIF

I've been back for a few days now spending my time by hanging out, catching up, eating and, of course, drinking with friends. My final Tulane class schedule (pending a possible drop) is screenwriting, long calculus II, introduction to popular music, ethics, adolescent psychology, and domestic and international terrorism.

Late night at The Boot - Lizzie thinks I look like Adrian in this picture.
I think it's the eyes. After all, we are brothers.

no classes = awesome

Lauren and I closed out Sunday night by goin' to Cooter Brown's, which I think qualifies as our regular haunt now. Lizzie came too and was nice enough to drive. We played pool, split a pitcher, and (of course) ate cheese fries.

Yesterday was entirely laidback and chill. It was great. I spent my day cooking, eating, going to the gym, watching television with Peter, seeing Blood Diamond with Shannon and Lizzie "Blood" Diamond, chatting online with Lauren, and going out with Josh, Joe, and some of their friends.

We went to Dragon's Den on Frenchmen, where Jody eventually met up with us because apparently Tucks wasn't that fun last night.

Apparently "the alley pic" is a tradition.

Then we went to F&M's for a quick round and snacks.

You know F&M's is dead when people actually play pool.

After quick stops at both Bruno's (old and new) and seeing The Boot closed at only three in the morning, we decided to call it a night.

Peter left for home a few hours ago.

And then there was one...

best day of Lauren's life

Well, that's what she said. She called me when she got off work to wake me up and tell me to wake up Peter for our long-awaited lunch.

I missed Shannon's call, so I returned it. She came to eat too.

So when we got to Harrah's for the buffet, we realized it was Champagne Brunch. So we had to ante up a bit more than we planned, but it was so worth it.

What a great buffet with lots of delicious food, free mimosas, and Lauren's chocolate fountain.

After that I decided to play a little blackjack and have some Johnnie Walker Black and Lauren and Peter decided to join as well.

We all won, and Lauren and I even doubled our money. Then we went to Blockbuster to get Pulse aka "Veronica Mars and Boone Carlyle Vs. Cyber Demons." Oh yeah, you love it.

They're sexymart enough to fix cars without tools.

If you've forgotten how significant that movie, let me refer you to perhaps my favorite voicemail of all time:

"Andrew! hi, it's Lauren, um [laughs] (Peter in background: 'okay, drunk dial.') I'm not drunk-dialing you. I'm calling you about something important! I want... [laughs] I want to go see the movie Pulse when you get back because I really want to see it, and I think you'llgosee it with me ('drunk diiial') so please dooon't see it without me. call me back. bye. ('drunk di-') [click]"

December?

I suppose it's time for an update.

The rest of Thanksgiving break I spent with my mom since my dad left on a well-planned trip the day after Thanksgiving and Adrian was seeing all his friends back from college for the first time. We shopped, cooked, played with our dog, saw The Prestige, saw The Departed (again), and ate a lot.

Since coming back here it's been the usual weekly stuff... grocery shopping, visiting Tara at Cafe Luna, going with Lauren to Cooter Brown's, having Bubble lunches with Rachel, going to classes, and studying. Ugh. But the semester's almost over anyway. And I saw Casino Royale, and, very minor nitpicking aside, it was awesome.

The Phi Sigma Pi "pick your poison" party was this past weekend, and the lovely Lizzie asked me to be her date. She was a Bahama Mama, I was an Irish Car Bomb, and everyone else was costumed as another alcoholic beverage. After the party at Grits officially ended some of us wound up at F&M's and then utilized Tulane's wonderful Safe Ride back to The Big Easy for late night food.

Mixed Drinks: Screwdriver, White Russian, Long Island
Iced Tea, Irish Car Bomb, Dirty Girl Scout, and Muff Diver

Last night Becca made chili and of course served it with sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese. AND she made brownies with frosting. Dinner was awesome, and the lucky group she served sat around watching (critiquing) Wife Swap and Supernanny... mostly because I think everyone was too busy talking to get up and change the channel.

sexual chocolate!

That may have been misleading. There is nothing remotely sexual nor remotely chocolate (unless you count the ice cream) about this post.

Friday night
was pretty laidback. I went with some friends to The Creole Creamery. Four of them attempted the Tchoupitoulas Challenge, and the rest of us were there for moral support.

Wes, Julie, Amelia, and Lauren were all defeated by their sundaes.

Sadly no one succeeded, so after a heavy amount of water and an even heavier amount of quality girl bonding bulimia time, we went to Bruno's to get food and, oddly enough, no drinks. I was surprised by and impressed with the quality of their burgers and cheese fries.

Saturday night
was supposed to be laidback. I was going to study and go to bed early after watching with Peter one of the funniest movies ever. It was on TV so no cussing, but it was still hilarious. I'll give you two hints. The first is the name of this post, and the second is this currency:

Yes, that is Eddie Murphy.

And then Shannon called and announced she was "doing something crazy tonight." My first instinct was coke off a stripper, but she meant that she was going out and drinking. This might not seem like much, but Shannon is usually responsible and whatever. It was Jenna (and coincidentally/auspiciously her boyfriend Jerry's) birthday. They and a bunch of their friends were originally going to Bruno's? Maybe? But we wound up everywhere else. The night began at Fat Harry's, and then proceeded to Delachaise (a lesbian? wine bar), and then danced on to F&M's, and then stumbled into The Palms. It was a fantastic night, and Jenna and Jerry are decidedly the cutest couple ever. In fact, if they weren't so cute, I'd hate them. Just the right amounts of genuine sweetness and bickering sarcasm. We left the bar past five in the morning after way too many drinks and Jenna meeting some guy we're going to call "Scott."

Aurell, JJ, Jerry, Jenna, myself, and Kristin

Sunday night
was mostly recovery. I went to dinner at Mona's with the Pitt St. Pretties, and we debated the issue, "Having sex or being called someone's girlfriend? Which should come first?" No pun intended.

Tonight
was fantastic! Whitney and her friend took on the Tchoupitoulas Challenge, the mountainous ice cream sundae of eight scoops, eight toppings, whipped cream, sprinkles, and cherries. Her friend Emily gave up with an amount left that was something between Amelia and Wes. Miss Walker on the other hand...

33 minutes!

She's amazing and joins Matt and me on the ice cream parlor's plaque.

No, I don't know how I managed or if I'll ever do it again.

the week's off to a good start.

Okay, so I'm behind again but not as badly as before. Sunday the internet wasn't cooperating, and yesterday I kind of got drunk randomly. Bygones.

David's birthday celebration was on Saturday night at Cooter Brown's. Several of his friends, several beers, several orders of cheese fries, and several shots. Fun David came back for the night, and it was good times. Even though he refused to do a body shot off of Peter, who was even conveniently sitting next to him, Fun David gave us a rendition of the power ballad "The Power of Love" on the car ride which segued into "Get Low" when Lizzie changed the station. And then he kind of got pushed fell into the bushes.

Any night that involves David looking like this halfway through...

...and looking like this by the end...

...is a good night.

Last night was supposed to be serious studying, but leave it to David to give me a present (screening passes) on his birthday, so Guy, Whitney, and I drove out to Elmwood but found out the Babel screening was already full. So we went to Applebee's Neighborhood Bar and Grill – Hello, Jewelyn "Humpy" Wellborn – and got dinner and more importantly drinks. We had the nicest, most patient waitress ever. The major question of the night was which TV show had the theme song "Closer to Free" which was playing at the restaurant.

Everybody wants to live
How they wanna live
And everybody wants to love
Like they wanna love
And everybody wants to be
Closer to Free

All three of us wondered independently before discussing it, and everyone immediately thought of "Friends" and then immediately knew that was wrong. I actually guessed correctly but wasn’t assertive enough, so we kept guessing and eventually called Tully who provided us with the answer.

After that, Whitney and I came back here and put a serious dent into a handle of Bacardi and watched The Rules of Attraction with Carrot Top's commentary. Hilarious even though neither of us is actually a fan of Carrot Top. Nate came home from his latest interview with news of a conquest to that, so we did a shot to it.

Then Whit-Walk and I decided to go to The Palms and drink some more and then The Big Easy.

Yeah, I’m nuts. What else is new?

And this is the TV show for those of you who care:

quick poll [Steph won by three.]

David's birthday celebration at Cooter Brown's was fun. Lots of beer, lots of cheese fries, and even lots of Fun David! I guarantee a few more pictures and a few more details soon, but first I'm taking a quick poll:

Which hot babe should be my new desktop background?

Lizzie (above) or Stephanie (below)?

Readers: Feel free to set one as your desktop background and to respond by comment, IM, E-mail, text message, messenger pigeon, any mode of communication...

Mom: Peter's candid portrait skills put mine to shame.

weekend/month over???

I don't know where time goes. Stephanie is finally 21. We all trekked down to Harrah's and then Pat O's for some festive celebrating.

Other notable moments of the weekend were cooking dinner with Adrian and the Tulane return to the Superdome. We students returned too, armed with daiquiris and beer. Close game but we lost.

photo courtesy of Stephanie Choy and her blog

a pic I took: cheerleaders encouragin' the green wave to roll.

Yesterday was Yom Kippur, so all the Gentiles wanted to go to lunch. I got like three phone calls at noon. I'd already made plans with Rachel to go to Nirvana but unfortunately forgot it's closed on Monday, so we went to Theo's. I'd never been. It was pretty good.

Adrian tried to do an international conference call to our parents in Bali the other night, and it didn't work. (I assume they were still sleeping 'cause it was like eight in the morning, and they were on vacation.) But they conference-called us both last night and were back in the continental states. And that's great because now I can more often quote the funny things they say.

And for you fellow youtube and Disney freaks, here's a live performance from a few weeks ago to commemorate the release of a certain double-disc dvd today.
